Today the Church honors and
remembers St. Bartholomew, an apostle. All
that we know about him with any certainty is that he was one of the 12
Apostles. His name means "son of Tolomai" and scholars believe he is
the same as Nathanael mentioned in the Gospel according to John, who says that he
is from Cana and that Jesus called him an "Israelite...incapable of
deceit." Tradition has it that he preached in India and Greater Armenia,
where he was flayed and beheaded by King Astyages.
Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, who gave to
your apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach your Word: Grant
that your Church may love what he believed and preach what he taught; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God for ever and ever. Amen.
